Vintage Beauty Tips That Still Work

Rose Makeup Stain
Did your beau buy you a bouquet of roses? Pluck a petal or two and crush them between your fingertips until you see red liquid seeping out. Dab and blend the rose extract over your cheekbones for a healthy flush and swipe the excess over your lips for an all-natural stain!
Quick Tip: Blend the stain quickly to avoid splotches.

Greasy/ Dirty Hair?
When mothers went a day between hair washes, they’d grab their diaper bag for beauty supply. Baby powder after all was the original dry shampoo. Formulated with starch, talc and fragrance, the inexpensive talcum powder still refreshes oily scalps and baby butts to this day.
Quick Tip: If baby powder is turning your hair ashy or gray let the powder sit for a couple of minutes to soak up the oils. Work the formula through your roots with a brush and your fingers

Rag-A-Curl
Steel rollers could often be cumbersome and uncomfortable to sleep in so inventive ladies found a cheaper and more comfortable solution by using leftover fabric. Take damp hair with a light coat of leave-in conditioner and roll over small 2”x 5” strips of rags close to the root of your hair. Tie the ends and leave overnight. In the morning you’ll unravel gorgeous waves without heatstyling or heavy duty rollers!
Quick Tip: Create rags from any excess fabric an old tee will do!
Lustrous Locks from Hops
Believe it or not ladies used to douse their locks in a bath of brew! The vitamin B and natural sugars present in beer gives hair the shine and extra volume that pin up Beauties were famous for. If your locks are looking lackluster soak your strands after shampooing with warm flat beer (the more hops, the better). Let the rinse sit in your hair for a few minutes, then wash out with cool water and condition after.
Quick Tip: Warm up a frosty brew on the stove before you bring it in the shower.
Pick-Me-Up Petroleum Jelly
Better known as Vaseline this wonder ingredient was a multipurpose face saver for retro ladies in their heyday. If you’ve stayed out all night dab a bit of petroleum jelly underneath puffy eyes and you’ll wake up to refreshed peepers.
Quick Tip: Looking for another use for this inexpensive helper? If you’re in a pinch and don’t have time for eye shadow, sweep a touch of the petroleum jelly over your lidsand brownbone for a subtle and pretty sheen.

Concealer 101

PENCIL
In a hurry? Concealer pencils are the ideal choice for mess-free application. Pencils are great to highlight and contour because they are easy to draw on the face. They’re also perfect for small flaws such as a blemish or dark spot. The tiny pencil tips are ideal for acne prone Beauties who need precise pimple camouflage and work well around the eyes to brighten shadows in the inner corners. Pencils are usually more wax or cream based so they will feel and possibly look heavier on the skin.

PEN
Most pen concealers feature a small brush for application and generally provide light coverage. Because these formulas are usually sheer and luminous they’re designed to brighten and conceal the delicate skin around the eyes. The radiant formula reflects light and blurs imperfections and discoloration. If your foundation flattens the dimensions of your face apply your pen concealer as a face highlighter to give a brightening boost.

STICK
Need to bring your face back to neutral? Many stick concealers are yellow based to color correct a red complexion. Because of the opaque formula a concealer stick is great for hiding red spots and dark under eye circles. Many stick formulas also include salicylic acid and other anti-inflammatory ingredients to zap zits while providing coverage. Since these can slide, take extra precautions to ensure durability. Set creamy stick formulas with a setting power for all day coverage.

CREAM/CAKE
Like concealer sticks, pan based cream or cake formulas provide full coverage in a rich budge proof base. A cream is the liquid version of a stick concealer while a cake formula has a texture similar to paste. They both have less control than a stick but are ideal for larger areas such as around the eyes or on your chin. Since these formulas are highly pigmented, you only need a little product for maximum coverage. To avoid over application, Lijha recommends applying a dab of these formulas with your fingers and blending out

LIQUID
Weightless liquid concealers provide light to medium coverage on the skin and many have hydrating properties. Liquid usually provides less coverage feels light on the skin, and adds more hydration. This kind of makeup is ideal for cloaking freckles, fine lines, capillaries, and smoothing out your skin tone. When applying the watery formula be sure to use a sponge or brush.
Is Vaseline the Secret to Ageless Skin?

You’ve seen those ageless Beauties smooth, glowing skin and not a wrinkle in sight! Want to know the most common thread that runs through their skin care regimen? It’s Vaseline otherwise known as petroleum jelly or petrolatum. The popular multipurpose balm is considered by many as their number one skin saver Marilyn Monroe used to coat it on her skin in layers! But what exactly is the stuff and what does it do to our skin?
The History of Vaseline
The story starts at an 1859 Pennsylvania oil rig. Workers discovered that even though they were operating heavy equipment the dirty paraffin like material that built up on rigs healed their cuts and bruises and kept skin soft. At the time a young chemist named Robert Chesebrough went out venturing to discover new raw materials. He came across the black wax and took it back to his lab. By refining the wax he created the clear formulation we now know as petroleum jelly and called it Vaseline! Since then it’s been a household staple
How Vaseline Works
The word petroleum might seem scary for some but it’s truly one of the most multitasking items you can own. From face to feet the jelly has many uses especially in a chilly climate. It’s a great product for chapped lips, dry elbows, hands, heels, and other tougher body parts. Some women swear by the substance on their face. But does the heavy wax clog your skin? It’s too heavy and high in viscosity to penetrate and clog pores. Petroleum has a high molecular weight which creates an impenetrable film on the skin keeping environmental junk out and moisture in. While it doesn’t moisturize the skin it keeps it hydrated. The jelly traps the moisture in the upper layers of the skin surface and prevents it from evaporating. It also makes dry wrinkles plump up and appear smoother because of Vaseline’s ability to retain moisture it’s widely used in skin care across the market. It’s important to note that the jelly isn’t synonymous with mineral oil which is a transparent liquid byproduct of the petroleum as it’s converted into gasoline.
Is Vaseline Safe?
Because the fossil fuel byproduct isn’t vegan-friendly it’s formed from dead dinosaur bones the jelly comes with controversy. While no studies have proven that it’s bad for you some people argue about the sustainability of the lubricant. Fortunately there are vegetable-based alternatives that use plant waxes and oils such as Alba’s Un-Petroleum Jelly to form a barrier on the skin like Vaseline does. So whether you agree with the politics of petroleum, no one can argue that it’s one of the most effective moisture barriers known. Beauties, do you believe in the power of Vaseline?
The 5 Most Useful Makeup Brushes in Your Kit
BLENDING BRUSH
A blending brush is hands down one of the best investments you’ll ever make in makeup. Known for its signature tapered shape the natural bristles softly meld any harsh edges in the crease (keep two or three clean backups on hand to blend out shadow). You can also use the tool to diffuse concealer underneath the eyes unlike a taklon brush designed for concealer the shape of the bristles practically airbrushes the cover up onto your dark circles.
FLAT BRUSH
You’ll always need a basic shadow brush in your kit. A flat headed brush picks up a generous amount of pigment and quickly lays down color on the lids before blending, and can also blend lip color. Most Beauties prefer dense natural bristles but synthetic taklon works just as well.
STIPPLING BRUSH
Affectionately termed “the skunk brush” after its black and white bristle design a stippling brush is one of the most versatile tools to have in your kit. The mix of synthetic and natural hair allows you to work with both powder and cream texture. Foundation, powder, blush, bronzer, highlighter you name it the brush applies it. The flat topped reverse trapezoidal shape allows it to cover larger fields of color and the wispy white fibers pick up the right amount of pigment.
DOME BRUSH
Considered the face equivalent of an eye blending brush a dome brush is an ideal choice for any precision sculpting such as contouring and highlighting. The tapered design smoothly distributes pigment into your bone structure and applies rouge to the apples of your cheeks like a dream.
ANGLED BRUSH
Used to wing eye liner, shape/ sharpen brows, and shape lips, the design of this detail oriented brush can be used with virtually any texture (gel, cake, powder, cream) and is small enough to tote for travel. Unlike flat tipped eye liner brushes the angular shape allows you to easily work pigment into the natural contours of your face. Whether you choose natural or synthetic hair make sure the bristles are stiff enough to stand on their own but soft enough on your skin

Review: Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadows

When I first saw these creamy eyeshadows at my local Walgreens my first thought was “look at all the pretty colors!” These remind me so much of MAC’s paintpots back in the day when they had colorful ones. (not sure why they stick to just the boring colors now-*sigh*)
What are they?
Colorful cream eyeshadows that come in 10 shades and last up to 24 hours.
What I love:
- The rich pigmentation and vibrant colors
- Fair price
- Apply easily and do not feel sticky
- Fun names
What I hate:
- Purple color does not show up well (Its meh)
- Not enough neutral shades (But hey thats what MAC is for)

I must say that I’m VERY impressed with these cream eyeshadows especially for the price. Even the packaging is the perfect size it’s easy to get my fingers into
The only downside is that if you try to blend the shimmery colors too much the color starts to disappear. However the matte colors are incredibly pigmented and blend very well. I really don’t have much negative to say about these eyeshadows! Good job Maybelline.
